Childhood neuroblastoma is a multi-faceted disease that presents special challenges to the nursing care team. The Advancements in Neuroblastoma Research International meeting (ANR2018) held in San Francisco, CA will include a half-day nursing symposium.
This symposium will be comprised of expert physicians and nurses from all over the country, discussing topics related to neuroblastoma treatment and nursing implications for patient care and will start off with an overview of neuroblastoma by a physician expert describing biology, clinical features, and risk-stratified therapy and outcome for children with disease ranging from localized favorable tumors to those with advanced metastatic disease, whose long-term survival is less than 50%.
The talks that follow will cover the challenging care aspects of the specialized and targeted therapies used to treat high-risk neuroblastoma. 131I-MIBG therapy is a very active targeted radiopharmaceutical used to treat both relapsed and now up-front patients, and provides the challenges of radiation protection, isolation and travel to specialized centers. Anti-GD2 monoclonal antibody therapy, now a standard part of high-risk neuroblastoma treatment, also provides unique nursing care requirements due to pain, allergic reactions and fluid imbalances. Current and future investigational targeted therapies and personalized medicine for neuroblastoma, such as kinase inhibitors and combinations, and an overview of protocols in the NANT consortium including new immunotherapies will be discussed in two consecutive talks.
Lastly, we will have a presentation about late effects related to neuroblastoma treatment.
